Pipe17 Now Ingests Shopify's channel_liable Field for Accurate Tax Remittance

To support accurate tax handling across commerce and accounting systems, Pipe17 has added baseline support for Shopify’s channel_liable field. This field identifies whether Shopify has collected and remitted sales tax on behalf of the merchant as a marketplace facilitator.

This enhancement is now part of Pipe17’s standard Shopify order ingestion. The data is exposed on every order and available to use in downstream workflows to:

  • Differentiate between marketplace-remitted and merchant-collected tax
  • Prevent double-counting tax in ERP or accounting systems
  • Improve payout reconciliation and revenue accuracy
  • Automate tax logic using Shopify’s source-of-truth indicators

Pipe17 provides the data as-is and does not enforce how tax is posted or reported in connected systems. This gives you flexibility to define your own tax handling strategy, backed by accurate order level data.

How Pipe17 Supports Marketplace Tax Visibility

Pipe17 captures and surfaces the channel_liable field on all Shopify orders, giving merchants and implementation teams the information needed to correctly interpret sales tax responsibility—especially for Shop channel orders where Shopify acts as the facilitator.

  • If channel_liable = true: Shopify has collected and remitted sales tax on behalf of the merchant as part of its role as a marketplace facilitator for the Shop channel (Shopify's marketplace app). The merchant should not record this amount as tax payable.
  • If channel_liable = false or null: The merchant is responsible for collecting and remitting the tax.

Why This Matters for ERP and Accounting Systems

Pipe17 makes this tax liability data available in every order record, allowing you to apply the correct handling logic in your ERP or financial systems without manual review or reconciliation.

Pipe17 does not enforce tax treatment or override accounting logic. Instead, we ensure accurate, transparent data is available so your team can:

  • Map tax fields appropriately during order syncs
  • Apply workflow rules that distinguish between marketplace and merchant tax responsibility
  • Maintain compliance without needing custom scripts or manual exceptions

This level of data control helps you automate confidently, reduce reconciliation time, and avoid costly reporting errors while staying aligned with evolving marketplace tax requirements.
